“LEMON SCENTED” by Sharon Hancock

I hand sewed these paper pieced hexagons together over a period of about twelve years. The fabrics are now very old fashioned. I did enjoy the process of sewing tiny little pieces of fabric together by hand, but I am not in a hurry to do another. Hand pieced & hand appliquéd with machined borders.

Professionally CUSTOM machine quilted by Sally McKenzie of Valley Quilts.

I will add descriptions for the quilts below when I get time.

Back at quilting after the holidays

Hi everyone, we (Willunga Quilters)  have had a very long rest over the Christmas period & are now back at the Uniting Church Hall. We have had almost 2 months holiday!

Our first meeting for 2011, was Saturday 5th February. It was great to see 3 new members. A big welcome to Joy, Delvene & Jenny!

We had a little hiccup with some members (mainly me) wanting to spread out a bit more & use the big hall, but it all settled down quickly. I am a bit claustrophobic to say the least. I also take a lot of different projects along & I need lots of room to spread it all out - the big hall is ideal. I have never liked the cramped space of the smaller room, especially once we get more than about 16 members attending. Give me the open spaces & fresh air anytime!

We had a very long meeting/discussion, but there were many things to talk about after 8 weeks off! Several members are keen to attend the Quilters' Guild Country Forum in March.
We also talked about the Queensland flood (well DISASTER) victims & hope to be able to make suitable contributions to those who have lost so much. Margaret Maynard showed us 2 quilts she has recently made for the Gawler flood victims. Given that 40 homes were flooded in our own state, we have decided to help those people BEFORE we set about helping out the Queensland victims.

A list has been passed around so that members can go through their supplies & bring along/donate various items for redistribution or for quilt making.

Louise brought up a few points at the meeting which are well worth noting (if I can remember them that is!)
  • Louise proposed that all items which need to be paid for out of our funds, must first be approved for purchase by the committee.
  • She also proposed that all members equally participate in setting up & cleaning up when we have future functions.
  • It was also voted on that instead of going out to lunch for our birthday celebration every November, we have a nice afternoon tea & a birthday cake. This was suggested because our Christmas party is always right "on top" of the birthday lunch & it can all be a bit too expensive.
I know there was more, but old age prevents me from remembering what she said! I should have made notes!

No-one was interested in taking up my offer to do another BOM  project (with foundation piecing). Nevermind!  When you see how gorgeous my blocks are, you will all be very jealous!

I hope to find the time to post some photos of our recent exhibition soon. It was a great success. but a lot of work as usual!

Our second week back at the hall

Hello everyone,
I really enjoyed our second week back at the hall - I don't know why - it was just a very pleasant day - we were more settled & everyone was happy - no complaints about anything! We had to rearrange our storage space again as the church didn't want us to store our coffee making things in their linen cupboard in the kitchen. Never mind - we now store our coffee cups in their kitchen cupboards - they were surplus to our needs anyway as the church has plenty of new mugs.
We did find the hall very cold, now that the carpet has been removed & it is also echos quite a lot. Maybe we should huddle together when we have a committee meeting so that everyone can hear better. I shut all the doors & put two fan heaters on & in no time the room started to warm up.

It was a new experience sharing the hall facilities with another group. A singing group was in the room the other side of the kitchen, so we had to share the kitchen with them at one stage. Another thing which will take a bit of getting used to. Nice background music for us though!

The first Block of the Month (BOM) patterns were distributed yesterday - a simple block to begin with. I am quite chuffed that so many have decided to participate. We badly needed a project. Jenni also handed out our new challenge which is due end October. We have to make a quilt (any size) which is based on a song title. I have already designed mine - we have millions of choices on this one as there are millions of songs to choose from - a great idea.

Brenda is off to Scotland. If I was a bit thinner I would have squeezed in to her suitcase - never mind! I will be away for the next two meetings so hope all is OK. Happy Quilting ladies!

Return to the Church Hall

Hi everyone,
Well our first day back at the Church Hall went without a hitch. Everyone pitched in to help find storage space for all our bits & pieces. We certainly do have a lot of gear! I arrived a little before ten o'clock, to find several members already there - they must have been very keen to see the new venue! The day felt a bit disjointed to me, but I was still not feeling well & everyone seemed to want to talk to me about something or other. I was emotionally exhausted when I got home. There will be a few issues with tables being set up I think as the hall is now available for hire to the wider community, so I am guessing things will not necessarily be left where they are easily accessible - I am sure it will sort itself out in time. The kitchen is excellent - it will take a while to figure out where everything is - we kept going over to the bench under the window as this was where the sink was previously - it is now in an island bench.
I was very disappointed to hear constant complaints from some re the flies! For goodness sake! Grin & bear it! I don't like flies either, but dislike whingeing more!!!
I am really looking forward to beginning our block of the month project - more than half of the members want to participate.
Debbie Brodalka also attended for the first time - nice to see you Debbie! See you all in May!

New Members

I am really looking forward to catching up with two new members at our meeting tomorrow. They are Debbie Brodalka & Tracey Raper. If you are reading this - then welcome to our group - you will love us - we are fantastic in every possible way!
For some silly reason, I was unable to add this text to the photo below, so am doing it as a separate post.
Several of our members kindly made the quilt (pictured below), which was purchased as a mystery quilt package (for $50) from the S.A. Quilters' Guild, with proceeds going to Bedford Industries. Approx $66,000 was raised! Not bad hey? Our finished quilt was then raffled & all proceeds were donated to Willunga C.F.S.
